After more than 25 years at the top level, Hans Lindberg has chosen to end his playing career to become sporting director for the men's team at HØJ Elite.

With that, Hans Lindberg draws the curtain on an impressive career in which he has won all the biggest titles in the world of handball – including the Olympics, the World Championship and the European Championship with the Danish national team, as well as the Champions League and the German Bundesliga.

For the past two seasons, Hans Lindberg has played for his boyhood club HØJ Elite, but at the age of 44 he is now ready to hang up his boots and open a new chapter.

"This is exactly the right time for me to stop and take on a new challenge. I'm happy with and proud of the career I've had, and I'm grateful for all the many great experiences I've been given. I've tried and achieved more than I ever dreamed of, and I'd like to thank everyone who has helped and supported me both on and off the court," says Hans Lindberg.

Now Hans Lindberg will help drive HØJ Elite's development forward even faster, as he swaps his position on the right wing for a role as sporting director. Both Hans Lindberg and HØJ Elite had hoped this would happen with the team in the league, but relegation to the 1. division changes nothing about the enthusiasm, the ambitions or the long-term plans.

"HØJ is something special to me, because this is where I started my handball career. I'm hugely looking forward to using my experience and knowledge from so many years in the world of handball to strengthen HØJ and help take the club to the next levels. The club is run by some very skilled and serious people, and the ambitions for the future are sky-high – it's a perfect match for my mentality. I see a really big potential, and I'm looking forward to helping fulfil it," says Hans Lindberg.

An absolute key figure in HØJ Elite's development

In addition to being sporting director for the men, Hans Lindberg will also take on a role in the commercial work of securing HØJ Elite's continued growth when it comes to sponsors and partners. And Lars Vinther, CEO of HØJ Elite, is very pleased and looking forward to Hans Lindberg taking up his new role at the club.

"First and foremost, we want to celebrate Hans Lindberg for the fantastic career he has had. Hans is one of the greatest Danish handball players in history, and his achievements and his mark on Danish handball speak for themselves. He has delivered at an incredibly high level for an impressive number of years, and that tells its own story about the unique dedication, professionalism and discipline that Hans possesses," says Lars Vinther, who continues:

"Hans has already helped us out a bit since he joined the club when it comes to signing players – such as Hampus Wanne, for example. But now he formally steps into a role as sporting director, where his extensive network, good name and knowledge of the world of handball will make him an absolute key figure in the continued development of our club. We have high expectations for the collaboration and look forward to benefiting even more from Hans' qualities off the court."

Hans Lindberg can look back on a career in which he played 308 international matches and scored 809 goals in the red-and-white national jersey. That makes him second on the list of players with the most caps in history.

His club CV includes Team Helsinge, Viborg HK, HSV Hamburg, Füchse Berlin and HØJ Elite. In addition to a host of major titles, he has also earned several individual honours, and he is, among other things, the all-time top scorer in the German Bundesliga with 3,115 goals.
