HØJ Elitehåndbold has decided to sign an agreement with Spillerforeningen Håndbold on maternity terms for the club's players. The agreement covers both men's and women's players and took effect on 1 July 2025.
The decision was made based on the management's wish to ensure clear and fair conditions for all employees – regardless of gender – and to create transparency and stability for both players and club.
”We would have liked to see a joint industry-wide agreement covering all clubs, but unfortunately we don't see any signs that such a deal is just around the corner – at least not when it comes to the men's players. When or if such an agreement does arrive, we naturally expect to switch over to it”, says Helle Rasmussen, chairwoman of the board at HØJ Elite.
The club stresses that for many of its players, handball today is a professional career path and not merely a leisure activity. That also brings with it a responsibility to ensure working conditions that are in keeping with the times and the situation in the wider labour market.
”At HØJ Elite we have employees on both the men's and women's sides, and we want every player to have clarity about their terms of employment – including, of course, when it comes to maternity leave. As we see it, the current situation means that male players formally – through legislation – have certain rights that they in practice have no opportunity to make use of. That is untenable, and it's something we want to put right at HØJ Elite. As far as we're concerned, Spillerforeningen Håndbold's proposal is the best available option at the present time, so we've chosen to sign up to it”, says Lars Vinther, CEO of HØJ Elite.
