Mors-Thy Håndbold – HØJ Elite 35-31 (16-16)
This was always going to be a seriously tough task when the HØJ Elite men travelled to Thisted on Tuesday night to face the league's number two, Mors-Thy.
The match was never a thing of beauty, but there was absolutely nothing to fault about either side's attitude and fighting spirit. Fantastic energy and drive was on show from start to finish.
The first half stayed tight, and we even managed to build a couple of two-goal leads along the way – most recently at 16-14 – before Mors-Thy levelled at 16-16, which was also the score at the break.
We went out for the second half with a clear feeling that we could "hang in there" on the Bette Balkan court, and for large spells that proved to be true.
Even though it was now the hosts who held the lead by a goal or two along the way, Mors-Thy struggled to shake off a strongly playing Till Klimpe and co., as we kept responding and pulling back level.
With just under three minutes to go, at 32-31, there were no more little comebacks left in the tank. We had to "gamble", while Mors-Thy at the same time put together a good closing surge that sealed the match for good.
Even though it ended in a frustrating defeat, this was a strong performance on a difficult away court – one that, with a bit of luck, could perhaps even have yielded a point or two.
The takeaway from Thisted is that both players and coaching staff once again showed great character. So we can – with pride – say that, after a difficult settling-in period in the håndboldliga, we are in a markedly better place.
That's why we also have the sense that, for long stretches of these matches, we can go toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in Denmark. We've already proven it, and we did so again on Tuesday night.
Top scorers for HØJ Elite:
Michael Damgaard with 8 goals, while Mikkel Olsen netted 5.
